Madagascar - Cylcone Ivan Last updated 3/25/2008 10:56:09 AM

Cyclone Ivan hit the island nation of Madagascar on Feb. 17, 2008, causing damage to property and disrupting lives. One of the biggest cyclones ever to hit Madagascar, Ivan packed winds that topped 125 mph (200 kph) when it swept onto the east coast.
Ivan has caused extensive damage to infrastructure and affected tens of thousands. The United Nations reports that more than 330,000 people were left homeless and 93 killed.
There was extensive flooding in many parts of the country and rivers have burst their banks. Ivan was directly responsible for the disruption of crucial agricultural production, the loss of hundreds of classrooms and school buildings, the destruction of water and sanitation facilities, and – even more dire – the deprivation of access to basic health services for thousands of people. A substantial number of houses have collapsed and many the villages have been washed away. UNICEF reports 500 schools destroyed. Many of the main access routes to the affected areas have been damaged making it difficult to travel in and out of this region.
Madagascar has a history of devastating cyclone encounters: the previous one, Fame, claimed 12 lives in late January 2008; in the 2007 cyclone season, the worst in living memory, six of these storms ravaged the island, killing over 150 people.
