Parts of northern Namibia are facing massive floods due to heavy rainfalls they have not seen in 50 years.

Fears of floods in the Caprivi have been raised further by reports of severe flooding in Zimbabwe and Zambia, which has so far killed at least 21 people and left thousands homeless.

The area is affected by flooding from the Zambezi River, together wtih waters from the Kunene in Angola.

Because the area is flat, many settlements are covered by water and hundreds have lost their homes. In some places, schools have closed for fear of the safety of children, especially where they have to cross rivers or streams. No loss of human life has been reported.

The Namibian government, Red Cross, and communities are helping those affected by bringing them to higher ground. But food and shelter needs continue to be a challenge.

ELCA companion church the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia has the largest part of its membership in this region. Thus, most of those affected are ELCIN members.
