Tens of thousands killed or left homeless following a devastating cyclone

Cyclone Nargis left a path of destruction in Myanmar, leaving more than 63,000 persons killed or missing and at least a million homeless. The cyclone coincided with a storm surge tide inundating fields and islands in the vast and low lying Irrawaddy delta region, Myanmar?s largest and most important river. The Myanmar government has appealed for outside assistance, though it has traditionally been suspicious of outsiders. Aid is starting to make its way to survivors amidst fears that the death toll could reach 1.5 million with provisions for clean water and sanitation. [more]
