Crafts from Vietnam

In Vietnam, kites in the shape of animals are very common. A rabbit is one of the favorite animal kites. Make a rabbit kite with a balloon and tissue paper.

Rabbit balloon kite

Materials needed:

8" long inflated balloons (helium-filled if you wish them to float)
Tissue paper
Cotton balls
Markers
String, or thin dowels for non-helium balloons
Glue
Tape

Fold a piece of tissue paper into quarters. Using the pattern below, cut a body for the rabbit. Adjust the pattern as needed to fit your balloons. Cut two ears from tissue paper. Using the face pattern, cut two face sides and draw a face on them with markers.

Tie a string around the middle of the balloon (if helium-filled). Wrap the tissue paper body around the balloon, and glue in place. Tuck the ears under one end of the body and glue in place. Glue face at one end, and a cotton ball tail on the other end.

If the balloon is not helium-filled, tape a thin dowel to one end to "fly" it through the air.

The phoenix is a mythical bird that is common is Asia. Use or adapt the pattern shown to make a paper cutting. You can cut the pieces out of different colored paper, or cut the bird out of one color and use markers or paints to color it.

Heavy paper for background
Bright colored paper
Paints or markers
Scissors
Pencil
Glue

Using the pattern given, cut out the phoenix and mount it on heavy paper. Then cut pieces of bright paper to the shapes inside the phoenix, and glue in place.

An easier option would be to use paints or markers to color the phoenix. Flourescent markers would make a very bright phoenix.
