Crafts from Palestine

Palestinians have handed down the tradition of rich embroidery through the years. You can make your own embroidered bookmark, with the word "peace" ("al-Salaam") stitched in Arabic.

Embroidered bookmark

Materials needed:

Counted cross-stitch fabric (Buy a size suitable for the crafters you will have; for children, the bigger weave is better.)
Embroidery floss
Cross-stitch needles
Scissors

Cut the fabric into rectangle pieces, making sure they are wide enough and long enough to stitch the pattern shown below.

With needles and thread, stitch crosses in the pattern shown.

For cross-stitching, make a row of one diagonal stitches, then go back in the other direction to finish the X, rather than making each one individually. Find someone who is familiar with cross-stitching to help teach others.

Older youth or adults can add a border in another color, or other designs around the word.
