Crafts from Chile

In Chile, applique wall hangings are made. Often scenes from local life are shown. Make your own applique hanging with fabric or felt scraps. Adapt the craft to fit the age of your crafters. Younger crafters may use glue and fabric paint, rather than stitching, to make their wall hanging.

Applique wall hanging

Materials needed:

10 by 15" muslin pieces
Fabric or felt scraps
Embroidery floss
Embroidery needles
Glue
Scissors
Fabric paint
Paint smocks

Give each crafter a piece of muslin, and let them cut fabric to make a picture. Browns and greens can be cut for a mountainous background. Add houses, trees, and people in front. The piece can be stitched on with cross stitches, as they often do in Chile, or simply glued on. Accent the piece by stitching sun rays, doors, people's faces, and so on, or use fabric paint for these details.

Make sure young crafters wear paint smocks if using fabric paint.
