FREE TRADE AGREEMENT
Brazil has been one of the most critical of the nations in Latin America of United States efforts to consolidate all nations in the Hemisphere into free trade agreements. As one of the Mercosur nations which include Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, Brazil has promoted a Mercosur approach to negotiations on free trade agreements with the United States. This has led the US to demand stiffer terms from Brazil.

LANDLESS PEASANT MOVEMENT
The Brazilian Landless Workers Movement is one of the largest social movements in Latin America and one of the most successful grassroots movements in the world. Hundreds of thousands of landless peasants have taken onto themselves the task of carrying out a long-overdue land reform in a country where less than 3% of the population owns two-thirds of Brazil's arable land. While 60% of Brazil's farmland lies idle, 25 million peasants struggle to survive by working in temporary agricultural jobs. The Landless Workers' Movement (MST) is a response to these inequalities. The movement has been successful in getting land into the hands of farmers.
