FOR YOUR ACTION - EAST AFRICA
HUNGER
852 million people throughout the world are hungry. Every year, over 5
million children under 5 die of hunger related causes. And yet we have the
technology to end the problem right now through more equitable distribution of
food.

HIV/AIDS
42 million people are living with HIV/AIDS; 3 million are children under the
age of 15. 25 million people have died from AIDS which has resulted in 13
million children losing one of both parents. As a result, child-headed
households are becoming more and more common in Africa.

DEBT RELIEF
Lutheran World Relief, along with members of the Jubilee USA Network,
supports 100% cancellation of multilateral debt for all impoverished nations.
Even with the current limited and conditional debt relief, indebted African
countries still spend an average of $14 per person on debt service while the
average spent on health care is less than $5 per person.

FAIR TRADE
In today’s new global economy we hear more and more about unfair wage practices,
child labor and unsafe work conditions in developing countries. But fair trade
products offer an alternative to this. The goal of Fair Trade organizations is
to benefit the artisan not to maximize profits. This means that when you
purchase a Fair Trade product, up to 40 percent of the retail prices goes to the
producer, whereas a typical commercial importer may be returning less than 1
percent. Not only do Fair Trade partnerships provide a fair wage, but they
promote safe working conditions and environmentally friendly practices.
