Information

The Companion Synod Program enables a synod of the ELCA to experience the gifts and witness of a church in Africa, Latin America, Asia, Eastern Europe, or the Middle East. The companion synod relationship exists for the purpose of strengthening one another for life and mission within the body of Christ. It offers us the privilege of mutually participating in the life of another church through prayer, study, communication, and exchange of pastors, leaders, visitors, and resources. It opens our eyes to the global challenge that Christ offers us today.

Exchange visits and exchange persons doing ministry are ways to make this program connect people with people and to share one another's gifts. This also allows us to see real situations and increase understanding between peoples as they seek to serve God in unique ways. All 65 synods of the ELCA are in a companion relationship, among which 17 synods are in a relationship with two different churches.

In relationships where the companion church lives under continual oppression or danger, the ELCA synod will be challenged to commit itself to special ministries of advocacy on behalf of the church and its people.
