William Rehnquist (Chief Justice, U.S. Supreme Court) Born in 1924 and a native of Shorewood, Wisconsin, Stanford and Harvard educated, Rehnquist began his court experience in 1952 as a law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson. In 1969, following 16 years of private law practice in Phoenix, Arizona, he was appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney General by President Richard M. Nixon. Two years later, he was named an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court and, upon the nomination of President Ronald Reagan, became Chief Justice on September 26, 1986. Rehnquist was active in civic and church work in Arizona and continues to be an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Bethesda, Maryland.
