Ruth Sovik (World Council of Churches and YWCA executive) This St. Olaf College graduate served on the staff of the World Council of Churches on three separate occasions . From 1965-67 and again in 1973 she was first an editorial assistant and then managing editor for the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism's (CWME) International Review of Mission . In 1978 she became CWME's deputy director with responsibilities for the justice and service units (including the Commission on Inter-Church Aid, Refugees and World Service.) In 1980, Ms. Sovik joined the World YWCA as associate general secretary and was appointed general secretary in 1983. She rejoined the WCC from 1986 until mid-June 1991, serving as deputy general secretary and moderator of Unit II. She was only the third woman in WCC history to serve as a deputy general secretary. Mrs. Sovik and her husband Arne, who served on the staff of the Lutheran World Federation, are retired and live in Minneapolis.
