Carl Mau (Lutheran World Federation executive) A sixth generation Lutheran pastor, Mau served as the fifth general secretary of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) from 1974-85. He had previously served as director of LWF's Hannover, Germany, office and as LWF associate general secretary for eight years. His tenure as general secretary was marked by a new "spiritual closeness" between world Lutherans and Roman Catholics, Orthodox and Methodists. Many consider Mau's greatest LWF contribution his concept of a worldwide partnership of Lutheran churches. His priority was full and equal partnership for women and Christians of all races in the life and decision-making processes of the church. He also is remembered for "discovering" the missing Lutherans of the Soviet Union who had been sent to Siberia during the Stalinist era. In addition to his international work he served congregations in Oregon, Washington, D.C. , and Wisconsin, where he also served as state campus ministry director. Dr. Mau died in 1995.
