| John Magalee, born in Guyana, whose grandparents were brought from India as indentured
servants, became the first Asian ordained by ELCA predecessor churches. Ordained in the
ULCA in 1950, he served as pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, New York, and then as a
U.S. Army chaplain until his retirement in 1986. Daniel Chu was ordained in 1953, Sam
Ujiie and Paul Nakamura in 1955.
