 Cordelia Cox (refugee resettlement director) The first woman to head a major U.S.
Lutheran agency, Cox directed post World War II refugee resettlement as director of
Lutheran Immigration from 1948-1957. A social work educator, she oversaw the U.S.
resettlement of more than 57,000 refugees from the Baltic states and Eastern Europe. She
later served as executive secretary of the Lutheran Welfare Council of Metropolitan New
York and died in March 1997 at the age of 95.
