| E. Theodore and Mercia Brenne Bachmann (partners in international ministry) For nearly
six decades, the Bachmanns played key roles for the international Lutheran community. They
met at a Lutheran Student Ashram, then later at a music conference at St. Olaf and, in
1941, they were married. "Ted", who died in 1995, served Lutheran theological
education for many years as a pastor and a seminary teacher in the U.S. and South America.
A premier church historian, he was also director of Lutheran World Federation (LWF)
publications. Mercia, a social worker, was his partner and international companion in
ministry. He was well known as a widely traveled author, post World War II World Council
of Churches liaison to the German churches and for serving the U.S. State Department's
Office of the High Commissioner for Germany. She was always counted as a full partner in
those ministries and as an advocate for world mission. Their collaboration in that latter
interest was evidenced by their LWF Lutheran mission directories, for which Ted wrote the
history and Mercia, serving as editor, provided the directory biographical research.
