| Jesus Cantu, age 6, became the first person baptized in Spanish at the new San Juan
Parish in San Juan, Texas, in 1923. The parish was formed in 1922 to combine the
ministries in San Juan and Alamo, Texas, with that of Ebenezer Church in Mercedes. It was
led by the Rev. William Durkop, who appealed to the Ohio Synod for support, which they
gave him at the rate of $2,000 per year.
