Mrs. L. C. Mellenbruck, member of a Joint Synod of Ohio congregation in San Juan, Texas, began providing Sunday school materials to Mexican children who came to pick up milk from the Mellenbruck farm in 1917. Later, during an epidemic among the Mexicans in San Juan, Mellenbruck began to administer health care. Eventually she started conducting Sunday school for the Mexican children on her back porch. This work developed into the synod's Mexican Mission, Board of American Mission, the first significant Lutheran work among Hispanics in Texas.
