| Sister Emma Francis (1875-1945) opened work at Ebenezer Home for Girls, at
Frederickstad, Virgin Islands, in 1908. In 1922 she was received by the ULCA Philadelphia
Motherhouse, becoming the first African-American deaconess. She helped organize
Transfiguration Lutheran Church, New York City, and was matron of the Queen Louise Home,
1927-1945.
