F. Melius Christiansen (Lutheran choral tradition) Though this son of Norway's first love was the violin, he received international fame as director of the St. Olaf Lutheran Choir from 1903-1944. His was considered the pioneer working in unaccompanied choral music and set a new high standard for the American choral art. He composed and arranged over 250 musical selections, and his choral techniques were spread throughout the country by St. Olaf graduates. They have come to make the great Christiansen choral tradition a recognized feature of American Lutheranism.
