Tollef L. Brevig went to Teller, Alaska, on the Seward Peninsula, as a school teacher in 1894, but his missionary efforts had a long-lasting effect. He spent time on the Seward Peninsula off and on until 1917, when the Norwegian Lutheran Church in America took over. Today there are five active congregations there, in Teller, Brevig Mission, Shishmaref, Wales and Nome. The oldest Alaska Native ELCA congregation in this area is Thornton Memorial, Wales, founded in 1890 by Presbyterians, becoming Lutheran in 1971.
