Comments on "The Gospel of John"

from the LutherLink meeting "TABLE TALK":

Question:  I just received the American Bible Society catalog yesterday. They are selling, either DVD or CD for $42 the movie "The Gospel of John." I believe someone upstream mentioned this film, something about being "good" and not having much staying power in the theaters. Is it a good film, not straying too far from the Biblical witness? Would like to know before money is spent.

PASTOR ELSA CLARK RESPONDS:

I'll de-lurk for a moment to support your buying this movie. A colleague and I sat spellbound for the two plus hours the movie took. I didn't have a Bible in my lap, but it seemed to be about as totally accurate as directly quoting Scripture (modern language) can make it. Also, whereas the violence in "The Passion" is right in your face, it is less direct in "The Gospel ..." and for me had more impact. I'd recommend your buying it at twice the price.

BTW, I don't think it lacked staying power, it just didn't get hyped like "The Passion" and was released so close to the Luther movie's release that it was overshadowed.
