The Unique Role of Faith Communities in Making the Oppressed Visible as Children of God
Presenter: Alexia Salvatierra

In her role as executive director of CLUE-CA, Pastor Salvatierra organizes religious leaders of all faith traditions to join low-wage workers in their struggle for living wages, health insurance and fair working conditions. CLUE-CA also is the lead agency nationally for the New Sanctuary Movement, organizing congregations in accompanying immigrant families facing deportation. Faith communities can bring special gifts and resources to broad coalitions focused on economic justice and human rights; faith-rooted organizing is a new model for enabling religious leaders and congregations to offer their full contribution to the struggle for justice. CLUE-CA has identified a number of specific communications opportunities and strategies that complement and support faith-rooted organizing, bringing attention to people who are poor and oppressed as well as highlighting positive contributions by the religious community. This workshop will teach participants what these unique messages are and how to communicate them.

Before, During and After: Coaching Congregations Through Crisis
Presenter:
Bob Fisher and The Rev. Sue Lang

From natural disasters to violent crimes, congregations can experience all kinds of crises that get media attention. They're often unprepared for both the crisis and the ensuing media attention. Synod communicators can help congregations to develop proactive crisis plans and assist when crises strike. We'll share learnings from a recent Pennsylvania church shooting and the media follow-up, and equip you to advise congregations before, during and after the crisis.
