Samples E, F and D

Sample E: COMPANIONS ON THE ROAD: A SESSION ON PRAYER

"While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them."

1. Centering in Christ.
2. Show and Tell.
3. Pressing Issues.
4. Listening to Jesus:

To Pray Is To Ponder

  • But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. "(Luke 2:19)

Discuss: What was Mary pondering? What do you ponder these days? Where? When?

  • Read the following passages before the session. Alone, ponder the passages and write some reflections about what they reveal concerning Jesus and prayer. What was the setting? What did Jesus say? What is Jesus teaching you about your own life? Relate a passage to your own life. Matt. 6:5-15; Mark 1:9-13; 9:2-8; 15:34; Luke 11:5-13; 18:35-43; 22:14-20; 22:39-46; 23:46; John 11:38-42; John 17

5. Making Connections:

To Pray Is To Adore And Act

  • Read Together Psalm 8, a Psalm of Adoration. Reflect: What is being praised and adored? What is the destiny of humanity? What is meant by "dominion" (the bridge between Adoration and Action)

  • Pick your favorite psalm to center your prayer. Where do you usually pray? When? Read the Psalm you chose. Share its meaning for your life. If you had to abandon your prayer to act on your thoughts where or to whom would the Spirit lead you? Share with your partner.

6. On The Road Again:

Scriptural Way To Pray: ATPIC.
# Address God through Jesus
# Give Thanks
# Petition; Intercession; Confession
When you are AT prayer, take your PIC.

End the session with each partner using the ATPIC way to pray.

"Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me... Ephesians 6: 18,19)

"Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?"

Sample F: COMPANIONS ON THE ROAD: A SESSION ON MINISTRY IN DAILY LIFE

"While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them."

1. Centering in Christ
2. Show and Tell
3. Pressing Issues
4. Listening to Jesus:

Before the session: write a brief occurrence in ministry (one page) according to the process listed below.

Meditation: Read slowly one more of the passages listed below. What does the passage tell about the ministry of Jesus? Let the Lord address you through this passage. What are some gifts for ministry that are expressed in the passage? Be prepared to share this with your partner. The passages are from Luke's Gospel. 4:1-13; 4:16-21; 4:51-57; 5: 1-1 1; 8:4-18; 9:1-16; 10: 1-20; 10:25-37; 12:22-40.

Reflection: Thinking back over the last month, what opportunities for ministry have been presented to you? What was the setting? Who were the people involved? What about the situation suggests to you this was an opportunity for ministry?

Description: Write out the situation, describing it as fully as possible (one page only). What makes this an opportunity for ministry? What did you do (or might you do?) What gifts are needed?

Now share your insights into the passages from Luke's Gospel.

5. Making Connections:

Share your occurrences in ministry using this format:
# Presentation of the incident in ministry. (keep it simple; just read the incident)
# Ask questions which clarify the incident (don't discuss it, just get it clear)
# Identification of the resources of the church relevant to the incident: What from our liturgy, scripture, history, theology, can shed light on this incident? A Jesus story?
# What are your partner's gifts for ministry in his\her situation?

6. On the Road Again:
# Next steps each of your will take in your occurrence in ministry.
# Prayer for each situation.

"Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?"
