What Do I Need to Know to Get Started in a Mentoring Relationship?

Remember the purpose of this program: To bring two people together to grow in their spiritual lives and thereby encounter Jesus.

As you participate in a pairings relationship under the guidance of your congregation, you will grow in study of scripture, grow in your ability to share your faith with another, and become better able to witness to your faith in word and deed.

The first step is easy. If you think you want to begin a relationship, or if you want more information, speak to your pastor or someone on your Parish Mentoring Task Force. If you have identified a person with whom you would like to journey in a mentoring pair, then begin to discuss the possibility with that person. If you have no one particular in mind, then express your openness to form a pair with someone suggested to you by the pastor or the Parish Mentoring Task Force.

Begin to think about issues you would like to explore:

  • the time you are willing to spend
  • the Scripture you would like to use
  • resources you will need
  • the kind of mentoring setting in which you would be most comfortable.

Write down your thoughts. When your partner has been identified (either by you or the church or pastor), contact that person and set up a meeting together with the pastor or a member of the Parish Mentoring Task Force (or, if you would prefer, the congregation can set up the first meeting for you and your companion).
