Program Idea of
the Month:
Theology in
Popular Music
Some of the most powerful faith formation
takes place when people plug in their Ipods--theology delivered,
with minimal distraction, straight to the brain. So build a program
(or a series) around the theological messages of popular music.
Some groups make clear theological references (U2, for example),
others only imply their vision. Invite students to bring in their
favorite tracks and discuss what the words and music say about the
world, the singer, the audience, and God. A Google search will give
you the lyrics to the most popular music. You can do this exercise
with "Christian Bands," of course, but the discussion is often more
lively when the music is less explicitly religious. Visit
