Here is the text of the
"Statement on the Current Situation in Palestine from the
Conference of Bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America" approved by the Conference on March 11, 2002:
"Presiding Bishop Mark S.
Hanson and the Conference of Bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America have issued the following statement:
"We continue to deplore all
action of violence against innocent civilians. We most vigorously
protest one particular violation against our family of faith.
"We cannot remain silent while
our brothers and sisters of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Jordan/Palestine continue to suffer as innocent victims of the
violence in the Middle East.
"We are especially shocked by
the recent attack on and occupation of the Lutheran School in
Bethlehem by Israeli military forces. This harassment of an
institution of faith and learning is unacceptable and will only
contribute to further erosion of the hope for peace.
"We appeal to President George
W. Bush to take immediate action to seek a cessation of violence
in the Middle East and to protect the lives and property of all
those who are suffering from unjust attacks."
