THE BIBLE TELLS US
God has reached out to people in a personal way
by sending Jesus Christ
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When
his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found
to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and
unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just
when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child
conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name
him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to
fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
"Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means, "God is with us."
Matthew 1:18-23
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of
Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has
been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay
him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem
with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he
inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem
of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:
'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who is to shepherd my people Israel.'"
Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them
the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying,
"Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word
so that I may also go and pay him homage." When they had heard the king, they set
out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it
stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped,
they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary
his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests,
they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a
dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.
Matthew 2:1-12
When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went
to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the
scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place
where it was written:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and
sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say
to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."
Luke 4:16-21
Now when the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch
over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were terrified and said,
"Truly this man was God's Son!"
Matthew 27:54
In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that
you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard
of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel that has come to you. Just as it
is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among
yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. This you
learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on
your behalf, and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit.
For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased
praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all
spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully
pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of
God. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and
may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to
the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He
has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his
beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all
creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and
invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers all things have been
created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things
hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn
from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the
fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to
himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of
his cross.
And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil
deeds, he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you holy
and blameless and irreproachable before him provided that you continue securely
established and steadfast in the faith, without shifting from the hope promised by the
gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven.
Colossians 1:3-23a
Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with
God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in
which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that,
but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and
endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint
us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has
been given to us.
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for
the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person though perhaps
for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in
that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we
have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For
if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much
more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we
even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received
reconciliation.
Romans 5:1-11
Once you were not a people,
but now you are God's people;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy.
1 Peter 2:10
Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.
He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who
has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of
God." Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of
God without being born from above." Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be
born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be
born?" Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of
God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what
is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be
born from above.' The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you
do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of
the Spirit." Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?" Jesus
answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these
things?
"Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and
testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you
about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about
heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven,
the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son
of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so
that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
"Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn
the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in
him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they
have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the
light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their
deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that
their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that
it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God."
John 3:1-21
I am grateful to God whom I worship with a clear
conscience, as my ancestors did when I remember you constantly in my prayers night
and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am
reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your
mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. For this reason I remind you to rekindle
the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give
us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.
Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me
his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God,
who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according
to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages
began, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who
abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
2 Timothy 1:3-10
You were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once
lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air,
the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among
them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were
by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the
great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us
alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved and raised us up
with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the
ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in
Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own
doing; it is the gift of God not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For
we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared
beforehand to be our way of life.
So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called
"the uncircumcision" by those who are called "the circumcision"
a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands remember that you were at
that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to
the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ
Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is
our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing
wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments
and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus
making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus
putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who
were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in
one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are
citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the
foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In
him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in
whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.
Ephesians 2:1-22
