Hunger Bowl Project

wh2c.gif (7660 bytes)The World Hunger Appeal is highlighting its 25 years of ministry by launching a multi-unit partnership: The Hunger Bowl Project. This ministry celebration is a partnership among ELCA colleges, universities, campus ministries, ELCA Art Management, and churchwide units. It culminates at the August 1999 Churchwide Assembly in Denver, Colorado.

All ELCA colleges, universities and campus ministries are invited to raise awareness of world hunger by "throwing soup bowls." Throwing bowls is actually shaping clay into soup-sized bowls and firing the bowls for preservation and use. Like hungry people, the finished soup bowls will be in different shapes and sizes. The project parameters are that each individual bowl must fit within a 6 to 7 inch cube for eventual shipping, display and use. Textures and colors will vary.

When students complete bowls, a local jury at each college will review the works of art and suggest five for entry to the Denver Churchwide Assembly juried show. Five cash scholarship awards will be given to five potters for their soup bowls and their campus' efforts to raise awareness and action in addressing hunger and poverty throughout the world.

All soup bowls will be packed and shipped by June to Denver and will be assembled in the hospitality area display. After the scholarships are awarded, each assembly voting member will be given a bowl to take home to his or her synod, with the hope of furthering connections among congregations and ELCA colleges, universities and campus ministries. The bowls will also be a vehicle to continue awareness of world hunger and to encourage further education and action through thank offerings. ELCA World Hunger resources may be obtained by calling 1/800-638-3522, ext. 2764, or visit http://www.elca.org/hunger/

This partnership project is sponsored in part by an Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) grant.
