Proposal of Interim Eucharistic Sharing with the United Methodist Church

News Release
ELCA Assembly Adopts Interim Eucharistic Sharing With UMC

Today, the Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA will listen to the presentation of a proposal for Interim Eucharistic Sharing with the United Methodist Church.

The Cross and Flame emblem of the United Methodist ChurchLutherans and Methodists first began ecumenical discussions with each other in 1977. In the 1980s, these groups issued common statements on Baptism and the role of bishops in each of our churches. In a step closer to full communion, the ELCA and United Methodist Church (UMC) have developed a proposal for Interim Eucharistic Sharing between the two churches. This document was sent to the eight Emblem of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Americaseminaries of the ELCA for study and response from faculty members. In March of this year, the ELCA Conference of Bishops endorsed the proposal and forwarded the document to the ELCA Church Council who recommended that the 2005 Churchwide Assembly approve a relationship of Interim Sharing of the Eucharist between the ELCA and the UMC. This May, the Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church approved the proposal.

The Methodists on this Proposal
“This is a historic time of being the body of Christ and connecting the gifts of various parts of the body so that the work and witness of Christ can be more effective and powerful in our communities. Our oneness is in Christ. So these agreements are not just about sharing communion with each other; they’re about our recognizing that we are a part of one body of Christ and thus one mission for Christ in this world.”

Bishop Peter Weaver, President of the Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church

With this commitment, congregation members and clergy of both churches will be encouraged to participate jointly in Holy Communion, explore new opportunities for shared ministry, and will be a step closer to achieving a relationship of full communion between our churches where clergy of one church body can serve in a congregation of the other. This can be especially helpful in remote or rural areas that do not have sufficient clergy to minister to the population.
