Renewing Worship

News Release
ELCA Assembly Accepts Plan For a New Worship Book, Materials

Lutherans could have a new red book in their hymn racks in time for Reformation Sunday in 2006.

Renewing Worship continues an on-going process that began with the work leading to the Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW) 30 years ago. The Churchwide Assembly is asked to affirm the direction of this process, which will result in the development of a new generation of worship resources for congregations of different sizes, settings, and backgrounds. These materials will be supportive of diverse congregations and worshipping communities across the ELCA and a vehicle for outreach to the unbaptized. They will enable us to worship faithfully and well in the new millennium.

Over the last five years individuals, congregations, and synods have contributed to the Renewing Worship process. As a result of this participation, the production of a new book of worship, “Evangelical Lutheran Worship,” is anticipated. This book will contain a core collection of hymns familiar to users of the LBW, in addition to a broad selection of new materials that reflect a broadened and more global focus.

A new “constellation” of worship resources will allow the ELCA to meet the changing needs of the church in a changing time. Resources will be available in a variety of media. Already available is a study guide, “With the Whole Church,” that will help the church focus anew on the how and why of worship.

With this commitment, congregation members and clergy of both churches will be encouraged to participate jointly in Holy Communion, explore new opportunities for shared ministry, and will be a step closer to achieving a relationship of full communion between our churches where clergy of one church body can serve in a congregation of the other. This can be especially helpful in remote or rural areas that do not have sufficient clergy to minister to the population.
