The congregation’s 1855 building was extensively remodeled in 1905. The central heating grate in the aisle floor probably dates from that remodeling effort, as do the gas lighting fixtures.

Fridhem Lutheran Church, Funk, Neb., ca. 1890.

Fridhem’s 40' x 20' sod building, built in 1879, was used until 1891, when a frame church was built. Pastor Andrew Kinell, pictured above in the pulpit above the altar, served Fridhem from 1889 to 1895. Aside from the last row, men appear to be on the right and women on the left.

Fridhem Lutheran Church, Funk, Neb., ca. 1900.
The frame building was moved to Funk in 1910. It was added to and remodeled in 1963 and 1984.
Interior decorations also progressed from simple, utilitarian designs to more elaborate settings. The plain meeting room gave way to more formal structures. Altar paintings, pipe organs, and carved woodwork were added, as were more practical features such as central heating and gas or electric lighting.

St. John's Danish Lutheran Church, Kronborg, east of Marquette, Neb., ca. 1890.
Interior of original building built in 1888-89. This structure was destroyed by a tornado in 1899. The heating system, consisting of stove pipes hung overhead, is visible in the picture above.


Fremount Lutheran Church, near Lindsborg, Kans., ca. 1905.
Organized in 1869, this Augustana Synod congregation built a second, larger facility in 1881. Pastor J.P. Aurelius served Fremount from 1904-1924. Kerosene lighting is evident in the picture above.


Danebod Lutheran Church, Tyler, Minn., ca. 1895.

Thorvaldsen's Christ statue is prominently displayed above the altar, while the locally-carved baptismal font is located at center front.

Nazareth Lutheran Church, Hutchinson, Minn., ca. 1920.
Founded around 1918 and a member in the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church, the congregation dissolved in 1943.

Ekedahl Lutheran Church, Valparaiso, Neb, ca. 1901.
A Swedish Lutheran congregation, organized in 1895, Ekedahl constructed its building in 1901. Served once a month by pastors from Lincoln, Wahoo and Ceresco throughout its existence, the congregation dissolved in 1931. The heating stove is visible at right.
