Bethlehem Lutheran Church and parsonage, Askov, Minn., ca. 1915. Founded as Den Danske Evan.-Luth. Bethlehems Menighed (the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Bethlehem's Congregation) in 1906, this congregation was a member of the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church. The building pictured above was built in 1914-15, while a new parsonage, immediately to the right of the church building, was added in 1919. |
Fremount Lutheran Church, near Lindsborg, Kans., ca. 1905. This Augustana Synod congregation, established in 1869, constructed its first building shortly after its organization. Fremount’s second, much larger building, pictured above, was built in 1881. |
| As immigrant Lutherans became better established in Midwestern communities, more elaborate structures were erected. Taller steeples and larger sanctuaries demonstrate the financial success of the immigrants, as well as their increasing numbers, both Lutherans newly arrived from the old country, and those born in the new land. | |

Emanuel Lutheran Church, Skandia, Mich., ca. 1907. Emanuel, an Augustana Synod congregation, was organized in 1894. It constructed its first building in 1907. |

First Lutheran, an Augustana Synod congregation organized in 1876, constructed its first building in 1883. When a new facility was built in 1910, the older structure was sold to a German Lutheran congregation, which used the building through 1949. The American Legion continued to use the building for community activities through the 1970s.
Founded in 1873, West Denmark, a member of the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church, constructed its first building between 1897 and 1900. This structure was hit by lightning and burned in 1937. A Danish-style facility was built to replace it in 1940. |
Nazareth Lutheran Church, Withee, Wis., ca. 1905. Nazareth, organized in 1892 as a member of the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church, constructed its first building in 1896. A bell tower was added in 1905. This structure was replaced in 1958. ![]() Immanuel (State Line) Lutheran Church, south of Wymore, Neb., ca. 1955. Immanuel was an Iowa Synod congregation, founded in 1883 by German immigrants from East Frisien. The congregation's first structure was built in 1884. Its second, pictured above, was built in 1904 and remodeled in 1953. The original 1884 structure has been used as Sunday School classrooms since 1904. ![]() Adullam Lutheran Church, Bertrand, Neb., ca. 1900. Organized in 1888 as a member of the Augustana Synod, Adullam purchased the old Westlanda Lutheran Church building, three miles north of Bertrand, and relocated it 10 miles northeast of Bertrand. A new structure was built in 1910. |
