Founded in 1872 as a member of the Augustana Synod, Bethel constructed its first building in 1891.The second building, pictured above, was dedicated in 1923.


Our Savior's Norwegian Lutheran Church, Hillsboro, N.D., ca. 1919.
Organized in 1917 by the merger of Immanuel (1892, Norwegian Synod) and Hillsboro Norwegian (1883, Norwegian-Danish Conference), this Norwegian Lutheran Church of American congregation continued to use Immanuel’s building, which had been constructed in 1893.

On Sunday, January 13, 1924, the congregation’s 1893 building was consumed by fire. Sunday School was in session when the fire was discovered, but no one was injured. A replacement building was built between 1924 and 1929.

 

Just as farmers are dependent upon the whims of the natural environment, rural churches also faced the power of nature. Tornadoes, fires, and windstorms destroyed church buildings, while droughts and crop failures devastated memberships.

On May 27, 1899, St. John’s parsonage was struck by a tornado, as were the church, cemetery, school house and other nearby buildings. Nineteen people were in the cellar of the parsonage when it was destroyed. All survived.

The congregation was established in 1880 and as a member of the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church. The congregation's first building, built from 1889-90, was destroyed by a tornado in 1899. Their second building, pictured above, was constructed in 1900.
