Marlene Whiterabbit Helgemo - 1st Native American, 1987

The Rev. Marlene Whiterabbit Helgemo, was the first Native American woman ordained as a Lutheran pastor. She graduated from Luther Seminary and her ordination service took place July 9, 1987, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Golden Valley, Minnesota. She served as associate pastor, University Lutheran Church of Hope, Minneapolis, 1987-1992. In 1992, she became pastor at All Nations Indian Church, a congregation of the United Church of Christ.
