Barbara Andrews - ALC, 1970

Less than two months after approval by the church convention, and less than a month after the ordination of Elizabeth Platz, Barbara Louise Andrews became the first woman ordained into the ministry of The American Lutheran Church. The service took place on December 20, 1970, at Edina Community Lutheran Church, Minneapolis. She served Community Lutheran as assistant pastor until May 1974, before moving to Detroit, Michigan, where she served as staff chaplain for Lutheran Social Services of Michigan. Tragically, Pastor Andrews died in a fire in her home on March 31, 1978. At the time of her death she was serving as interim pastor at Resurrection Lutheran Church, Detroit.
