Dr. Kathryn Baerwald, First Woman General Secretary (Vice President in ELCA)

The newly elected Dr. Kathryn Baerwald and the Rev. Dr. David Preus, bishop, have their photo taken just after Dr. Baerwald was elected to the Office of General Secretary of The American Lutheran Church in 1982. At the time, Dr. Baerwald was a Minneapolis attorney who also served on the staff of the TALC Foundation. She was elected on the fourth ballot to the highest Lutheran church office ever held by a woman prior to the start of the ELCA. Dr. Baerwald also served on the ELCA merger Commission for a New Lutheran Church. In 1987 her term as secretary concluded and she returned to private law practice, currently serving as counsel for the United Way of America, Alexandria, Virginia.
