Dorothy Marple, LWF, Geneva, Switzerland

Dorothy Marple began her career in 1953 as dean of women at Thiel College, Greenville, Pennsylvania. From 1962-1970 she served as Executive Director of Lutheran Church Women for the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). She also held positions on the executive committee of the National Council of Churches and was a delegate to the World Council of Churches assembly in Nairobi, Kenya and to Lutheran World Federation assemblies in Evian, France and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

From 1975-1985 she was assistant to the president/bishop of the LCA. In 1986 Dr. Marple headed the Transition Team for the New Lutheran Church. The team was responsible for planning for transfer of program and staff from three churches into the newly merged Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). In 1987 she accepted a position as assistant general secretary of the National Council of Churches in the U.S.A. Although she retired from that position, she did not retire from her work in the church. For the ELCA, she headed the task force on the Study of Theological Education for Ministry, whose report was presented to and accepted by the 1995 assembly of the church.

Above, Dr. Marple addresses the Lutheran World Federation International Consultation for Women, Geneva, Switzerland in 1984.
