First (Joint) Conference of Evangelical Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouses

Training of deaconesses in North America was begun by several Lutheran church bodies, at several different motherhouses, the earliest of which was at Philadelphia. They began cooperating together and held their First (Joint) Conference of Evangelical Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouses in 1896. Today they are all survived by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Deaconess Community, Chicago. The archives of several of the following motherhouses are now part of the ELCA Archives, Chicago. Here is the full list of motherhouses which are part of this history, with founding dates:
