Deaconess - No Marriage Allowed

The Milwaukee Deaconess Motherhouse, founded in 1893, originally affiliated with Passavant’s Pittsburgh Synod, later affiliated with the Iowa Synod. Among the answers in this brochure is that deaconesses were expected to be unmarried or widowed without children and “free from such home obligations as would interfere with the pursuit of their calling.” (This is now no longer a requirement.)
