Maud Powlas Receives Honors
in Japan
 Maud O. Powlas, at far left,
with the director of the Colony of Mercy (Jiai-en) Kumamoto, Japan,
meeting with an interdenominational women’s group to visit and
understand how they might help in the work at the colony. After
retirement Powlas returned to be honored in Japan at the sixtieth
anniversary of the colony in 1978. She also received the Fourth Order of
the Sacred Treasury from the Emperor of Japan; was featured in a
Japanese Lutheran television film in their “Mothers of the World”
series; and her autobiography was translated and published in Japanese.
