Maud Powlas, Missionary in Japan

Maud O. Powlas, 1889-1980, was the founder and developer of Jiai-en, the Lutheran Colony of Mercy, in Kumamoto, Japan. She sailed for Japan in 1918 and except for the war years, 1941-1945, she remained there as a missionary until she retired in 1960. At the time of her death, the colony had grown into a network of twenty-one institutions in different localities. A particular tribute to her work and that of the Colony was this visit paid by Emperor Hirohito in 1949.
