English Language Mission in Freeport, IL. 1881

First Lutheran Church, Freeport, Illinois was originally known as Women’s Memorial because the Executive Committee of the General Synod Women’s Home and Foreign Mission Society, founded in 1879, made Freeport one of its first projects. Miss Sarah Grosman had canvassed the area and made an appeal to the Northern Illinois Synod in 1879 to begin an English Language mission. It was June, 1881 when the Rev. Thomas F. Reeser was called as missionary to Freeport under the direction of the WHFMS.
