Martin Luther is among the most frequently portrayed individuals in world history. The following images represent just a small sample of the total number of portraits produced. Most of these are from the 19th century. Many were modeled after Lucas Cranach the Elder's portraits of Luther. Often Luther's portraits represent the spirit of the era in which they were produced, rather than portraits in the real sense of the word. Beginning in the Reformation Era, Luther's portrait and scenes from his life became "intellectual weapons" in the spiritual warfare of ensuing centuries.
