School of Missions Collection

In 1954, the United Lutheran Church in America (ULCA) authorized the creation of a School of Missions. The site chosen for this school was at the then Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary. It opened in 1957 and by 1959, the Augustana Lutheran Church was sending its missionary candidates there for study.

The school itself was a graduate-level academic training institution sponsored by the Chicago Lutheran Seminary and the Board of Foreign Missions of the ULCA. When space would permit, candidates appointed by boards other than the ULCA and also ULCA missionaries on furlough who were enrolled in the Division of Graduate Studies could study there.

The following is an abbreviated listing of the School of Missions collections. The complete listing, from which this information was taken, was compiled under the direction of Dr. David Lindberg, Director of the Archives Department, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. The seminary's archives are included in the Region 7 archives. According to the director of the Krauth Memorial Library at LTSP even though there have been seminary graduates who served as missionaries, the number has been small. There would be very little in the seminary's archives in the way of primary source archival material. Any material from their graduates most likely would be in the ULCA or LCA files located at other archives.

The seminary has a few scattered pieces, relevant to global missions, at LTSP. They have information on the Reed Award presented at the Japan Lutheran Seminary and was commissioned by Paul Feil, a missionary to Japan. They also have the original Wantanabe painting that is the pictorial background for the annual award.
