Lutheran Churches in the World: A Handbook, edited by E. Theodore Bachman and Mercia Brenne Bachmann. Minneapolis: Augsburg, 1989, 631 pp.

Contains brief but comprehensive essays on the history of all Lutheran churches in the world, in both traditional sending countries and traditional receiving countries. Excellent introduction.

Lutheran Mission Directory, edited by Mercia Brenne Bachmann. Geneva: Lutheran World Federation, 1982, 421 pp.

Shows the interrelatedness of Lutheran endeavors worldwide, including those ecumenically linked.

The Encyclopedia of the Lutheran Church, edited by Julius Bodensieck for the Lutheran World Federation, Minneapolis: Augsburg, 1965. Three volumes, each over 800 pp.

Contains articles on the development of churches around the world under the categories of "Lutheranism in Africa," "Lutheranism in Asia," etc.
