Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church

  Tabor Lutheran Church
Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1900 as a member of the Augustana Synod to serve the Swedish residents in the Cheltenham neighborhood of Chicago. Purchasing lots on the northwest corner of 80th Street and Edwards Avenue (now Escanaba), the congregation constructed a one-story chapel by August 1899. The congregation was officially organized on February 27, 1900.

By 1902 a larger facility was need. The first services in the completed basement were held in April 1904, with rest of the building completed in February 1906.

Early books have been microfilmed and are available at the ELCA Archives and at the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. Filmed as Augustana #A29, the microfilm includes records from 1900 to 1930. The ELCA Archives also has congregational histories, church publications and other materials relating to Tabor.
