St. Paul's English Evangelical Lutheran Church

St. Paul's English Evangelical Lutheran Church of Humboldt Park was organized Jan. 8, 1887. Services were held in a German Methodist Episcopal church at Rockwell St. and Wabansia Ave., and later Gamboni's Hall on California Ave. In 1888 two lots were purchased at Hirsch St. and Fairfield Ave, and a church building was constructed. Dedication for the building was held in 1890.

In 1908 the basement of a new building at Hirsch St. and Washtenaw Ave. was constructed. The new facility was dedicated on November 25, 1915.

In 1889 the congregation joined the Swedish Augustana Synod, but left to join the Hauge's Synod in 1902.

In 1919 St. Paul's absorbed St. John's. In 1925 St. Paul's merged with Bethlehem and Our Savior to form United, which in 1928 moved to Oak Park, Ill.

The facility at Hirsch and Washtenaw later was used as St. Fidelis Catholic Church before being demolished in 1968.
