St. Andrew's English Ev. Lutheran Church

Work began in the spring of 1900 to organize Lutherans in the Cuyler and Gross Park neighborhoods of Chicago by Rev. C.G. Stacy. Work in Gross Park began in June with a Sunday School, while services and other functions were held at Cuyler. The Cuyler English Ev. Lutheran Church was organized in September 1900, after which Rev. Stacy concentrated his efforts on that congregation.

Rev. R.L. Patterson took charge of the Gross Park mission until he was replaced by Rev. S.M. Lutz on May 10, 1901. Rev. Lutz helped to organize the mission as St. Andrew's English Evangelical Lutheran Church and was installed as the pastor on Nov. 24, 1901. 

The congregation constructed a small chapel at Melrose and Paulina Streets.

In 1911, as both mission congregations were struggling, discussions began on the merger of Cuyler and St. Andrew's. St. Andrew's disposed of its property in January 1912, but negotiations were prolonged until the first of September, 1912, when the two congregations united to form the English Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension.

Ascension disbanded on March 22, 1998. The original record books for Ascension, as well as possibly those for St. Andrew's and Cuyler, are located at the ELCA Region 5 Archives in Dubuque, Iowa.
