Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church

  Calvary Lutheran Church
Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1923 as a member of the Augustana Synod. In September 1914 a Sunday School was organized and met in a home at 6144 S. Keating Ave., in the West Lawn neighborhood of Chicago. For seven years the school was conducted in portable school buildings on 62nd St. and S. Kenneth Ave. In the spring of 1922 families of the Sunday School met and decided to purchase a lot and build a chapel in which to worship. A one-story bungalow (pictured above) at 6118 S. Kenneth Ave., was completed and dedicated on June 11, 1922. The congregation was organized on April 25, 1923.

Completion of the rest of the church building had to wait until after the Depression and World War II. Dedication for the new sanctuary (pictured below, original parish hall at right) was held December 5, 1954.
