ELCA Policy on the
Banning of Landmines |
Social Statement "For Peace in God's World"; adopted 1995 by
more than a two-thirds majority vote.
"Most importantly, this statement recalls that the basis of
the Church's peace calling is in God's final peace, the
peace of God's eternal reign. That calling is to proclaim
the Gospel of God's final peace and to work for earthly
peace.
"To encourage the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America—its
churchwide organization, synods, congregations, and
church-related organizations—to advocate for a global ban on
land mines. . ." (p. 1)
"We particularly urge a sharp reduction in the number of
weapons of mass destruction. We call for arms control
agreements that substantial, equitable, verifable, and
progressive...In particular, we give priority to . .
.agreements to ban the production, sale, and use of land
mines." (p.18)
Assembly Action CA97.2.3 (1997):
"To support the call for an international ban on the use,
production, stockpile, and sale, transfer, or export of
anti-personnel land mines;
To call on the government of the United States to sign as
soon as possible an international treaty that bans
anti-personnel landmines immediately . . ." |
