ELCA Policy on the Banning of Landmines

Social Statement "For Peace in God's World"; adopted 1995 by more than a two-thirds majority vote.

"Most importantly, this statement recalls that the basis of the Church's peace calling is in God's final peace, the peace of God's eternal reign. That calling is to proclaim the Gospel of God's final peace and to work for earthly peace.

"To encourage the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America—its churchwide organization, synods, congregations, and church-related organizations—to advocate for a global ban on land mines. . ." (p. 1)

"We particularly urge a sharp reduction in the number of weapons of mass destruction. We call for arms control agreements that substantial, equitable, verifable, and progressive...In particular, we give priority to . . .agreements to ban the production, sale, and use of land mines." (p.18)

Assembly Action CA97.2.3 (1997):

"To support the call for an international ban on the use, production, stockpile, and sale, transfer, or export of anti-personnel land mines;

To call on the government of the United States to sign as soon as possible an international treaty that bans anti-personnel landmines immediately . . ."
